**Short answer:** No one person owns Samsung. Samsung Electronics is publicly traded on the Korea Exchange, with the founding Lee family retaining control through cross-holdings. Lee Jae-yong, grandson of founder Lee Byung-chul, is Executive Chairman.

"Who owns Samsung" has no single-name answer, because Samsung Electronics is a public company. But control is a different question from ownership, and the honest answer involves both.

> **Ownership and control are different questions**
>
> The Lee family holds a fairly small direct stake in Samsung Electronics — single-digit percentages. People find that surprising, because they clearly control the group.
> The answer is a web of cross-shareholdings between Samsung companies. Samsung Life holds shares in Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T holds shares in Samsung Life, and the family holds Samsung C&T. A modest holding becomes effective control.

## The short version

| | |
|---|---|
| **Founder** | Lee Byung-chul, 1938 |
| **Current Executive Chairman** | Lee Jae-yong (Jay Y. Lee) |
| **Ownership** | Publicly traded on the Korea Exchange |
| **Controlling influence** | The Lee family, via cross-holdings |
| **Headquarters** | Samsung Digital City, Suwon, South Korea |

## The founder

**Lee Byung-chul** founded Samsung in 1938 in Daegu, Korea, as a trading company selling dried fish, vegetables and noodles. He expanded into textiles, insurance and retail before establishing **Samsung Electronics in 1969**.

His decision in the 1970s and 1980s to invest very heavily in semiconductors — against considerable scepticism at the time — is what turned a Korean trading conglomerate into a global technology company. He led Samsung until his death in 1987.

## The family since

**Lee Kun-hee**, his third son, took over in 1987 and led Samsung through its transformation into a global brand. His "change everything except your wife and children" declaration in 1993 launched a quality-first restructuring that is credited with making Samsung competitive internationally. He died in 2020.

**Lee Jae-yong** (also written Jay Y. Lee), his son and the founder's grandson, is the current **Executive Chairman**, formally appointed in 2022.

## How the family controls a public company

The Lee family's direct stake in Samsung Electronics is relatively small — in the single-digit percentages. Control comes instead from a **web of cross-shareholdings** between Samsung Group companies.

Samsung Life Insurance holds shares in Samsung Electronics; Samsung C&T holds shares in Samsung Life; the family holds a significant stake in Samsung C&T. The chain means a modest direct holding translates into effective control of the group.

This structure is characteristic of Korean *chaebol* and has been politically contentious for decades. Successive Korean governments have pushed to unwind cross-holdings, and inheritance tax obligations following Lee Kun-hee's death in 2020 — among the largest tax bills in Korean history — forced the family to sell down some holdings.

## So who actually owns the shares?

Samsung Electronics trades publicly, and its register is broadly held:

- **The National Pension Service of Korea** — one of the largest single shareholders
- **Foreign institutional investors** — collectively a very large share; BlackRock, Vanguard and similar funds
- **Samsung affiliates** — Samsung Life Insurance and Samsung C&T
- **The Lee family** — a relatively small direct stake with outsized influence
- **Retail investors** — Samsung Electronics is among the most widely held stocks in Korea

If you hold a global index fund, you almost certainly own a small piece of Samsung.

## Where Samsung is headquartered

**Samsung Digital City** in **Suwon**, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea — about 30 km south of Seoul. It is a large campus housing research, development and administration for Samsung Electronics, employing tens of thousands.

The broader Samsung Group is headquartered in **Seoul**. Samsung Electronics America is based in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey.

## What the Samsung Group includes

Samsung Electronics is the best-known arm but not the whole:

- **Samsung Electronics** — phones, TVs, appliances, semiconductors
- **Samsung Display** — OLED and LCD panels, sold to competitors including Apple
- **Samsung Biologics** — contract pharmaceutical manufacturing
- **Samsung C&T** — construction; built the Burj Khalifa and the Petronas Towers
- **Samsung Heavy Industries** — shipbuilding
- **Samsung Life Insurance** — a major Korean insurer
- **Samsung SDI** — batteries, including for electric vehicles

Samsung's revenue is large enough relative to South Korea's economy that its performance measurably affects national economic statistics — a concentration with few parallels elsewhere.

## Is Samsung state-owned?

No. Samsung is entirely private and publicly traded. It has no government ownership. The Korean government has at times intervened in its affairs through the courts and regulators, but it holds no stake beyond the National Pension Service's ordinary investment position.

## Is Samsung related to LG or Hyundai?

No. All three are South Korean *chaebol*, but they are separate companies with separate founding families and no shared ownership. Samsung and LG are direct competitors — see [are LG and Samsung the same company](/explained/are-lg-and-samsung-the-same-company). Hyundai is automotive and unrelated to either.

## In short

Samsung is a **publicly traded** South Korean company with no single owner. It was founded by **Lee Byung-chul** in 1938, and his grandson **Lee Jae-yong** now serves as Executive Chairman, with the family exercising control through cross-shareholdings rather than a majority stake. Headquarters are at **Samsung Digital City in Suwon, South Korea**.
