The internet is full of Android advice, and most of it has the same shape: a numbered list of twenty things to try, in no particular order, in the hope that one of them works. Clear the cache. Restart. Reset network settings. Factory reset.

That approach is not neutral. At best it wastes an afternoon. At worst it costs someone their data — the classic case being a person who factory resets a phone, losing every photo on it, to fix a problem that turned out to be lint in the charging port.

We started UpFour to do the opposite.

What we do

UpFour publishes guides to Android settings, hidden features, privacy and troubleshooting — covering stock Android as it ships on Pixel, and Samsung's One UI, which between them account for most Android phones in use.

Every troubleshooting guide is written as a diagnostic sequence rather than a list. Each step rules something out, so you narrow the problem instead of shotgunning it. By the end you should know not just what fixed it, but why it broke.

How we write these guides

Exact paths, not vague advice. Every instruction names the real menu route — and the Samsung One UI variation where it differs from stock Android, because that is where most guides written for a Pixel fall apart on a Galaxy.

Sources you can check. Guides are written from official documentation published by Google, Samsung, Microsoft and, where relevant, government agencies and standards bodies. Every article lists what it was checked against, with links, so you can verify anything yourself rather than taking our word for it.

We say what does not work. Closing background apps does not save battery — it costs battery, because Android has to cold-start them again. RAM boosters make phones slower. Clearing every cache on a schedule achieves nothing. These myths are repeated endlessly, and they waste more of people's time than the real problems do. We call them out by name.

We flag risk before you take it. Where a step is irreversible — a factory reset, clearing app storage, deleting an account, tripping a hardware fuse — we say so before the step, not after.

Dated updates. Every article shows when it was last checked. Android moves settings between versions and manufacturers rename them freely, so a stale menu path is worse than no menu path at all.

Corrections

We get things wrong sometimes. Devices differ, software changes, and we cannot see your screen from here.

When a reader tells us a path has changed, we fix the article and re-date it, rather than editing quietly. You are entitled to know when something was last actually checked. If a step does not match your phone, tell us — it is the most useful message we receive, and it makes the guide better for the next person.

Device coverage

Guides target current Android as shipped on Pixel, with notes for Samsung One UI where it diverges. Paths on OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola and Nothing are usually close to stock Android, though menu names vary — use the search bar at the top of the Settings app if a name does not match.

Because Android is not one product, we try to be honest about the limits of that: a guide cannot account for every manufacturer, carrier build and regional variant in existence. Where behaviour is known to vary, we say so rather than pretending otherwise.

Independence

UpFour is not affiliated with Google, Samsung, Microsoft, or any device manufacturer or carrier. Android and Google are trademarks of Google LLC; Samsung, Galaxy, Bixby and One UI are trademarks of Samsung Electronics. We use those names to describe the products we write about, nothing more.

Nothing here is sponsored placement, and no guide exists to sell you an app. When we recommend against a category of software — "cleaner" apps, RAM boosters, third-party QR scanners, VPN-based ad blockers — that recommendation is the whole point of the article, and no advertiser gets to change it.

How the site is funded

UpFour is supported by advertising, which covers hosting and lets the guides stay free to read with no paywall and no account required.

Advertisers have no influence over what we publish or what we conclude. Ads are visually distinct from editorial content. If you would rather not see personalised advertising, our Cookie Policy explains exactly how to opt out — and, since we write about Android privacy anyway, we would rather tell you how than hope you do not ask.

Who writes this

Guides are published under The UpFour Desk, our editorial byline. That page sets out our method and areas of coverage in full.

We would rather claim less and have it be true. We do not claim to test every guide on every device, because that is not possible — we claim what we actually do: write from primary documentation, name the source, state the date, and correct it when a reader tells us it has drifted.
